Its history dates back to the 1990s. During this period, due to the rapid growth of the region’s population, general education schools and secondary specialized educational institutions began to open extensively.
- In 1993, in order to train pedagogical personnel for newly established educational institutions, the Aktau branch of Atyrau University was opened by order of the Minister of Education.
- In 1996, the branch, together with the Aktau Polytechnic Institute, laid the foundation for Aktau State University named after Sh. Yessenov.
- Starting from the 2025–2026 academic year, the university will begin operating under a new organizational structure in accordance with the order of the Rector.
